Sven grew up in Eisenhüttenstadt, a planned town in East Germany. There he discovered music between brass bands, his parents' records and the few radio stations he could receive with his home-made radios. His early passion for electronics remained an element of his later music.

He began to play the clarinet and guitar, later adding drums and piano. The self-taught composer's debut album, Pocket Symphonies, was released on the Deutsche Grammophon label in 2013.

He regularly tours with his concert programmes and performs alongside classical ensembles with live electronics and percussion.

Major concert venues include the Barbican Centre London, the Southbank Centre London, the Reina Sofia Madrid, the Accademia dei Lincei Rome, the Prague State Opera, the Alexandrinsky Theatre St. Petersburg, the Esplanade Concert Hall Singapore, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.

Sven's works have been performed by many renowned artists, including the BBC Singers, the Fauré Quartet, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, cellist Jan Vogler and conductor Kristjan Järvi.

Since 2017, Sven Helbig has hosted his weekly music special Schöne Töne on Radio Eins in Berlin, in which he shares his extensive knowledge of music history and presents new music. Sven Helbig was honoured with the Dresden Art Prize and is a Maestro of the National University of San Marin in Buenos Aires.
